The Battle Mountain Chapter and the Winnemucca Chapter, both of Nevada, were honored to be chosen by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for its National Solid Minerals Award for 2001. The BLM presents this annual to recognize a person, organization or company that has made a substantial contribution to education about responsible use of our nation's solid mineral wealth. Women In Mining has been effective in several areas, but the BLM emphasized their contribution to educators, providing accurate teaching materials that reach students with important information about the role of minerals in their lives. In particular, the two Chapters have contributed tremendous energy and volunteer hours in support of Nevada Teacher Education Workshops. They have developed lesson plans and have presented many of these lessons in the classroom. They have shared these lessons at National Science Teacher Conferences (NSTA). This helps give teachers more tools to effectively teach our young people. The Chapters, along with representatives from the four other WIM Chapters, recently conducted workshops at four NSTA Conventions, as well as numerous state and local conventions. The BLM also praised the WIM Chapters for awarding scholarship grants to deserving young people who are working toward a career in mining. The WIM organization was founded in 1972 in order to promote education, scientific, legislative, and other programs to foster public awareness of the contribution mineral production makes to the national economy and the public good. WIM Education Foundation Director Scotty Norman (Battle Mt) remarked "It's very rewarding to bring hands-on mineral education to thousands upon thousands of school kids through their teachers. The development of these activities has been a 25-year evolutionary process for us. One of our goals is to continue to reach as many people as possible, to bring this education to everyone. It is a goal of ours, through education, for people to make more informed decisions politically through making them more aware of how important minerals are, not only to our national economy, but to our daily lives." The awards ceremony was attended by Arloa Woolford, President of the WIM Education Foundation (Winnemucca), Betty Valley (Battle Mt), and Cindy Hartman (Winnemucca). Arloa and Betty accepted the awards from Brenda Aird, group manager for the Solid Minerals Group.
